Where Canadian briefings actually come from: CFPS, the Flight Information Centres, and the GFA, plus what changes when a US-trained pilot crosses the border.

In Canada, you get a weather briefing online through NAV CANADA's Collaborative Flight Planning Services (CFPS) at plan.navcanada.ca, or by phone from a Flight Information Centre at 1-866-WX-BRIEF (1-866-992-7433); both are free. The METARs and TAFs will look familiar to any US-trained pilot. The product that won't is the Graphical Area Forecast (GFA), which replaces the textual area forecast entirely, and the regulation behind it all is CARs 602.71, Canada's version of 91.103.

Where do Canadian pilots get a weather briefing?

Canada's air navigation services are run by NAV CANADA, a private non-profit rather than a government agency, and the briefing infrastructure reflects that: one national provider, two front doors.

The primary online source is NAV CANADA's Collaborative Flight Planning Services (CFPS). It is a single web app that combines aviation weather, NOTAM briefings, and flight plan filing, amending, and cancelling. You create a free account, build a route, and CFPS assembles the METARs, TAFs, GFA panels, SIGMETs, AIRMETs, PIREPs, and NOTAMs relevant to it. Because the weather products and the flight plan live in the same tool, the workflow is closer to a modern EFB than to the old "read a wall of text, then phone someone" model.

By phone: the Flight Information Centres

For an interpretive briefing, Canada still has humans. Flight Information Centres (FICs) are staffed by flight service specialists who provide briefings, consultation on marginal or unusual weather, and flight plan filing. Within Canada, the number is 1-866-WX-BRIEF (1-866-992-7433). If you are staring at a GFA panel showing a trough draped across your route and you are not sure what it means for your afternoon, this is the call to make: the specialists brief Canadian weather all day and know the regional patterns.

The reference document behind all of it is the TC AIM (Transport Canada Aeronautical Information Manual), whose MET section explains each product in detail, the same role the AIM's weather chapters play in the US.

What is the GFA and how do I read it?

The single biggest adjustment for a US-trained pilot is the area forecast. Canada has no US-style textual area forecast. The planning product for the big picture is the Graphical Area Forecast (GFA): a set of regional chart panels covering the country, issued several times daily with fixed valid times.

Habit to build: open the GFA before the TAFs, not after. The GFA tells you what the system is doing; the TAFs tell you how it touches two specific airports. Pilots who read TAF-first tend to anchor on two good airports and miss the wall of weather between them.

How is a Canadian briefing different from a US briefing?

Less different than most pilots expect, in the products; more different in the plumbing. Canadian METARs and TAFs use the same format as the US, and the altimeter setting is in inches of mercury just like at home, so your decoding skills transfer directly (if they need a refresh, start with how to read a TAF). A naming trap worth flagging: both countries have a product abbreviated "GFA," and they are not the same thing. The US GFA is an interactive web tool; the Canadian GFA is a set of issued chart panels with fixed valid times. When a Canadian briefer says GFA, they mean the panels.

Crossing the border as a US pilot

1800wxbrief and Leidos cover your US legs; for the Canadian portion of the route, use CFPS or call a FIC, because that is where the Canadian GFA, Canadian NOTAM briefing, and Canadian flight plan handling live. ICAO flight plans are required for cross-border flights, so file in ICAO format regardless of which side you file from. Two more Canadian preflight items deserve their own reading: Canadian NOTAMs work a little differently than the US system, and Canada's CYA, CYR, and CYD special-use airspace has no exact US counterpart.

What about the mountains and the north?

Southern-corridor Canada is well covered by METAR stations and TAFs. Get into the mountain passes of British Columbia or anywhere north of the populated strip and the reporting network thins out fast: long stretches of route with no METAR, no TAF, and terrain that manufactures its own weather between the stations that do exist.

NAV CANADA's answer is one of the most useful briefing tools on the continent: an extensive aviation weather camera network. The cameras sit at aerodromes and in passes where instruments are sparse, and they let you look at the actual sky in the actual pass before you commit to it. A GFA can tell you the forecast cloud base; a camera shows you whether the pass is open right now. For mountain and northern flying, checking the cameras along the route is not a nice-to-have, it is a core part of the brief.

The FICs earn their keep here too. A specialist who briefs the same mountain corridors every day can tell you how the forecast usually verifies in a given pass, which is exactly the kind of judgment a chart cannot encode.

Turning the briefing into a decision

The Canadian products change; the decision structure does not. You still reduce the brief to the same questions: ceilings and visibility along the whole route (GFA plus TAFs), icing and freezing levels against your usable altitudes, wind against your runways and your personal maximums, and NOTAMs against your departure, destination, and alternates.
