Frequently Asked Questions

FlightDecide walks you through a simple flight setup: you enter your departure airport, destination, alternates, aircraft type, fuel load, and passenger weight. Once you submit, the app:

  • Fetches live weather data (METARs, TAFs, winds aloft, SIGMETs, PIREPs) from aviationweather.gov
  • Retrieves current NOTAMs for your airports
  • Computes weight and balance and takeoff/landing performance using your aircraft's POH data
  • Calculates fuel requirements based on your route and operation type (Part 91, 135, or 121)
  • Scores all of this across 8 risk categories: green, amber, or red
  • Sends the complete picture to our AI engine, which generates a narrative briefing with specific callouts and mitigations

The result is a GO, CAUTION, or NO GO verdict with a scored breakdown and plain-language AI briefing, in seconds.

FlightDecide includes a growing library of aircraft types with real POH performance data, from trainers to turboprops and jets:

  • Trainers: Cessna 150/152, Cessna 172 Skyhawk, Piper PA-28 Cherokee
  • Singles: Cessna 182 Skylane, Cessna 206 Stationair, Piper PA-28-235 Dakota
  • High Performance: Cirrus SR22, Mooney M20J, Beechcraft Bonanza A36
  • Twins: Piper PA-34 Seneca, Beechcraft Baron 58, Cessna 310
  • Turboprop: Piper PA-46 Meridian, Beechcraft King Air C90, Pilatus PC-12
  • Jet: Cessna Citation CJ1+, Citation CJ3, Embraer Phenom 100

Pilot plan subscribers can also add their own aircraft by importing POH performance data into a custom profile.

Yes. Weather data is fetched live from aviationweather.gov at the time of each analysis. This includes:

  • Current METARs (updated every 20-60 minutes at reporting stations)
  • TAFs (updated 4 times daily and amended as needed)
  • Winds aloft forecasts
  • Active G-AIRMETs and SIGMETs
  • Recent PIREPs along your route

Data is as current as the government data service at the time you run the analysis. Because conditions change, we recommend re-running your analysis close to departure, and obtaining an official weather briefing before every flight.

Yes. FlightDecide supports both VFR and IFR flight planning. The app applies the correct fuel reserve requirements for your flight rules selection:

  • VFR: FAR 91 day and night reserves
  • IFR: FAR 91.167 alternate and missed approach fuel requirements
  • Part 135/121: Extended reserve requirements for commercial operations

The AI briefing also considers IFR-specific factors like ceiling and visibility at your destination and alternate, approach minimums (based on published limits), and icing conditions at altitude.

However, FlightDecide is not a replacement for a full IFR flight plan, ATC clearance, or official dispatch release under Part 121 or 135 operations.

The AI analysis is powered by a state of the art large language model trained on aviation knowledge. When given accurate input data, it produces well-reasoned and generally accurate briefings for typical GA flight scenarios.

That said, there are important limitations to understand:

  • AI models can occasionally produce plausible-sounding but incorrect statements (hallucinations)
  • The AI's knowledge has a training cutoff and may not reflect the latest regulatory changes
  • Complex or unusual scenarios may not be handled as well as straightforward ones
  • The AI cannot observe actual conditions at the airport; it only knows what data is in the analysis

We recommend treating the AI briefing as a thorough starting point, not a final answer. Verify any specific claim that will influence your decision against authoritative sources.

Custom aircraft profiles are available on the Pilot and Pro plans. To set up your aircraft:

  • Go to Settings and select "Aircraft Profiles"
  • Tap "Add Aircraft" and choose "Custom" or start from a built-in template closest to your aircraft
  • Enter your aircraft's basic empty weight, usable fuel capacity, and CG envelope
  • Add your performance figures: Vso, Vs, Vne, cruise speed, fuel burn at cruise power
  • Enter takeoff and landing distance data from your POH for various conditions

You can save multiple profiles if you fly more than one aircraft. Each profile can also store your personal weather minimums and typical loading configurations.

FlightDecide uses the following data sources:

  • aviationweather.gov: METARs, TAFs, winds aloft, G-AIRMETs, SIGMETs, PIREPs (the FAA's official aviation weather service)
  • FAA NOTAM system: Current NOTAMs for your departure, destination, and alternate airports
  • Built-in POH data: Aircraft performance figures compiled from publicly available Pilot's Operating Handbooks
  • AI Analysis Engine: For generating narrative briefings and synthesizing all data into a clear verdict

We do not use third-party commercial weather providers or subscription weather services. All weather data is sourced directly from government services.

We take your privacy seriously. Here is what happens with your data:

  • Your flight data (airports, aircraft, load) is used only to generate your analysis
  • Analysis data is processed by our AI partner's API. Their privacy policy governs their handling of transmitted data
  • We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers
  • Flight history is stored securely and accessible only to you
  • You can delete your account and all associated data at any time
